Värejä omenapuun oksista / Colours from apple tree twigs

Kun aloitin omenapuunoksilla värjäämisen, oli ensimmäisenä työnä oksien silppuaminen. Sitä työtä varten minulla on oma rakas oksasilppurini. Ajoin omenapuunoksat silppurin läpi kahteen kertaan.
When I started the process of dyeing with apple tree twigs, the first thing I had to do was to chop the twigs with my dear old chopping machine. I put the twigs twice through the machine.




Sitten laitoin oksasilpun likoamaan veteen värjäyskattilaan yön yli, ja seuraavana päivänä keitin siitä väriliemen. Kuumensin liemen kiehumapisteeseen kahteen kertaan ja annoin sen jäähtyä kuumennusten välillä. Lopuksi annoin liemen jäähtyä, ja sitten siivilöin oksasilpun pois liemestä. Siinä liemessä sitten värjäsin lankani.
Then I soaked the chopped twigs in my dyeing vessel overnight, and the next day I boiled the dye bath. I let the liquid come to the boiling temperature twice, letting it cool in between. Finally I let the dye bath cool, and then I sieved the chopped twigs off from the liquid. Now I had the dye bath ready for dyeing my yarns.

Värjäsin villa-polyamidi-sekoitelankaa (Novitan 7 veljestä) 150 gramman vyyhdeissä, jotka olin purettanut etukäteen alunalla (10% kuivan langan painosta). Ensimmäinen väri, jonka sain kolmeen vyyhtiin, oli tuollainen tylsähkö keltainen, joka näkyy vasemmanpuoleisessa vyyhdissä. Koska en ollut oikein tyytyväinen väriin, yritin tehdä sille jotain. Ensin värjäsin yhden vyyhdin uudestaan omanpuunoksilla, ja tuloksena oli sinapinkeltainen väri (toinen vasemmalta). Kokeilin toiseen vyyhtiin rautavihtrillipuretusta, ja tuloksena oli aika hieno harmahtava vihreä (toinen oikealta). Kirkkaimman keltaisen (oikealla) sain, kun annoin käytetyn väriliemen käydä kattilassa viikon verran, ja laitoin sitten siihen yhden etukäteen alunalla puretetun vyyhden, jonka annoin seistä liemessä pari päivää ilman kuumennusta.
I dyed wool-polyamide yarn in 150 grams skeins, which I had pre-mordanted with alun (10% alun from the dry weight of the yarns). The first colour I got was a dull yellow (the skein on the left). Because I didn't quite like that shade, I tried to do something to it. First I dyed one skein over again with apple tree twigs dye bath, and the result was a mustard yellow (the second skein from the left). The next dull yellow skein I mordanted with iron, and I got a quite fine greyish green colour (the second skein from right). The brightest yellow (right) I obtained by letting the used dye bath ferment in the vessel for about a week, and then putting a pre-mordanted skein in the bath and letting it stay there for a couple of days without heating.

Omenapuunoksasilppua tuli niin paljon, että en jaksanut käyttää sitä kaikkea heti. Loput silpusta kuivatin pihalla pressun päällä ja pakkasin sitten paperikasseihin odottamaan tulevaa käyttöä.
I got so much chopped apple tree twigs that I couldn't use all of it right away. I dried the rest of the chopped twigs in my yard on a tarpaulin, and the I packed them in paper bags to be used later.
